  64.     The <span class="guimenuitem">Merge Down</span>
  65.     command merges the active layer with the layer just below it in the stack,
  66.     taking into account the various properties of the active layer, such as
  67.     its opacity and layer
  68.     <a class="link" href="gimp-concepts-layer-modes.html" title="2.¬† Layer Modes">mode</a>.
  69.     The resulting merged layer will be in Normal mode, and will inherit the
  70.     opacity of the layer below. If the layer below is not opaque, or if it is
  71.     in some mode other than Normal, then this command will generally change
  72.     the appearance of the image.

  75.     The most common use of <span class="guimenuitem">Merge Down</span> is to
  76.     construct a layer, by starting with a ‚Äú<span class="quote">base layer</span>‚Äù (usually
  77.     opaque and in Normal mode, so that you can see what you are doing), and
  78.     adding a ‚Äú<span class="quote">modification layer</span>‚Äù on top of it, with whatever
  79.     shape, opacity, and layer mode you need.  In this case, merging down the
  80.     modification layer will combine the two layers into one, without
  81.     changing the way the image looks.
